Tire Collection Program

Community Tire Collection Program

Are waste tires a problem in your community? The Independence Conservancy's Community Tire Collection Program offers a workable solution to the widespread scrap tire issue.

Scrap Tire Disposal for Our Communities

Old tires are a problem - what do you do with them? Piles of tires are ugly and can pose health, safety and fire hazards. Scrap tires hold water which breeds mosquitoes that can carry diseases like Zika and West Nile Viruses.

Since 2001, our tire collections have taken in over 66,000 tires from residents of Beaver, Allegheny, Washington and Lawrence Counties. With the help of our volunteers and host municipalities, our tire collections have been safe, orderly and well received by the public.

How Community Tire Collection Works

Neighboring communities can work together to host a regional collection.

We do not limit the number of tires anyone may bring or require proof of residency. We encourage everyone to participate.

We offer no quantity discounts. Fees are the same for everyone. Small businesses are welcome.

We take tires on rims. Our portable machine removes tires from rims and shears the rubber into several pieces. We pack the cut rubber into your municipal dump truck.

All rubber is properly disposed and all metals are recycled. We leave no mess left behind.

No rain dates! Tire collections are held rain or shine.

Independence Conservancy Provides:

Equipment: Our portable tire shear/de-rimming machine, skilled operating crew and liability insurance.

Labor: Our volunteers unload tires from residents' autos; collect the user fees and direct traffic. Additional helpers are always welcome.

Disposal arrangements: We provide a shipping manifest for each municipal truck used to transport cut tires to Imperial Landfill in Findlay Township.

Cleanup: We remove all scrap rims for recycling. We tidy the collection site at the end of the event.

Publicity: We provide digital files for advertising in your municipal newsletter, website or social media.

Host Municipalities Should Provide:

Collection site: We need ample space for a safe, orderly collection. Municipal garage areas work best. There should be at least two ways in and out of the collection area for optimum traffic flow. Many people bring trailers.

Hauling: We need cooperation from the municipal road crew. At least one single axle dump truck with sideboards and tarp to haul the cut tire pieces to Imperial Landfill in Findlay Township.

Disposal costs: Payment of tipping fees at Imperial Landfill.

Publicity: Widespread publicity of the event to local residents via your social media, newsletter, newspaper briefs, radio, bulletin board, etc.

Restrooms: Our volunteers need access to township facilities for restrooms, lunch and shelter from severe weather.

Food: Our workers need fuel too! We appreciate lunch and drinks for about 12 volunteers, convenient foods like pizza or hoagies. They sometimes need to work past lunchtime to ensure proper cleanup.

Municipal Staff: At least one municipal employee or supervisor must be present from 8am-1pm on collection day in case the tire shear crew needs help with moving trucks or equipment at the collection site.
